India Mill, Darwen, Lancs.
The lady from the agency said exit the M65 at junction 4, turn right onto the A666 to Bolton, and after a mile or so, look out for the chimney. You can't miss it. She was right.
I had a great deal of respect for the late Fred Dibnah the steepljack. This is just the sort of building that he would have waxed lyrical about. You can imagine when these buildings were built, the impact they would have had upon the local community. I took this shot with the car camera, as I have resumed working in a call centre, and cannot bring a camera on sight. Understandibly. There is so much detail in the brickwork on the chimney, it is a pleasure to look at. These buildings were built when the merchant manufacturer class were not scared of spending their brass.
Fred was once asked by a "posh" BBC producer, why he wore his cloth cap. Fred replied in his wonderful Bolton Twang, "Basically, It's a replacement for 'air." My dad nearly choked on his tea, as he was similarly follicaly challenged, as am I. Poor old Fred.
