Now we celebrate Valborg mässoafton in Lj&oum
The name comes from Saint Valborg Valborg who evangelized in Germany during the 700's, and became abbess. The actual valborgsmässofirandet is partly a Swedish tradition that formerly lit fires before it was time to release the animals to pasture.
The aim was to chase away the supernatural beings and predators. In Germany, however, were the idea that witches were chased away by the fire. It is believed that the Germans are the ones who first brought the fires to Uppland and that the tradition thus came to be spread over Sweden in the 1800s.
