No chance of gardening today. Best just relax and curl up with a good book. Alfred Wainwright (see yesterday) will have to wait for another day while I finish Roger Bingham's social history of Kendal. He is a district councillor and obviously proud of his local connections.

However, he is a realist as far as the weather here is concerned. In describing the production of woolen cloth, and the need for drying in the open air, he says 'Any attempt to dry anything outside in Kendal has always been an exercise of hope over experience'........agreed!
