Borestone

Near the Bannockburn Heritage Centre this monument, surrounded by a rather odd circular wall, proclaims:

"For God and St Andrew"

Robert the Bruce
King of Scots
planted his standard
near this spot
when the
Scottish patriots
under his command
vanquished the army of
Edward II of England at
the Battle of Bannockburn
24th June 1314

The statue you can see in the distance is of Robert the Bruce. This monument was erected in the 1950s - apparently nearby there used to be (at least bits of) the original borestone (whatever that is), but according to Professor Google it was stolen in 1967, so this is all there is to mark the spot.

There are a lot of places round here to which the Borestone has given its name - several roads, primary school, bowling club and pub to name a few.
