Walk the Line

Wikipedia says (so it must be right, right?) a line in the sand is a metaphor with two similar meanings: "The first meaning is of a point (physical, decisional, etc.) beyond which one will proceed no further ..... The second is that of a point beyond which, once the decision to go beyond it is made, the decision and its resulting consequences are permanently decided and irreversible".

So imagine my dilemma this morning when discovering a line of sand in Knutsford whilst walking across the Heath to Sainsbury's Metro store to get the milk and papers. Could I get back if I crossed this?

As it happens, the site is also pretty much where the former Tatton MP Neil Hamilton and Martin Bell had their stand-off in the infamous Battle of Knutsford Heath in 1997 over Cash for Questions and corruption. Bell was staying over the road in his Bell's Bunker at the Longview Hotel. Bell of course ousted Hamilton as the local MP, but the ghosts are long gone of their joint, self-serving PR stunt. Who knows what latest MP George Osbourne is up to 100 yards away in Tatton Tory HQ. Is this one of his economic devices to divide and rule rich and poor tax payer?

There are no Dragons to fear of course beyond the line, just a Middle England demarkation of which side that the forthcoming Knutsford Royal May Day fair caravans and lorries can decamp and set up. The fair will start to rumble-in on huge wagons from after midnight on Sunday and the peace and equilibrium of Knutsford Heath is about to be disturbed again for a week or more. I imagine it will feature in my Blips.

Anyway, fear not - for as great muse Ian Fraser "Lemmy" Kilmister of Motörhead prophecises:

I see the line in the sand,
Time to find out who I am,
Looking back to see where I stand,
Evolution,
Evolution
