The Haw Bridge

The Haw Bridge over the river Severn
This bridge was completed in September 1961 following an accident in December 1958 when a barge struck its predecessor causing it to collapse. Replacing a ferry the original bridge on this site was constructed in 1824 at the behest of the people of Cheltenham hoping trade with south Wales might by-pass Gloucester! In former times at periods of low water the Severn was fordable at this point and the crossing was known as "Haw Passage".
