Spring is coming

What is this? Stuff is all over the garden from the winter, waiting for spring and new plants. These are the compressed root systems of two potted plants, without the pots. The ice is in shadow most of the day, and is therefore preserved, but pock-marked. Perhaps this looks a little creepier than I hoped.
