Sorry Miss

While I love active and responsive dogs, I have never really been able to connect with cats. Until now I have had absolutely no interest in taking care of a cat. None.

Today was an exception.

First time I saw it clearly, it was quickly crawling away from the streets, hind legs dragging behind. A sad sight to be seen from one's rear view mirror, even after the smallest of thumps. I still feel awful about it. I saw it before, as a blur. I probably could have swerved more, bah... but it seemed to dart towards me and not away. Foolish cat.

I stopped the car without really pulling over and spent the next five minutes looking for it. I guess instinct took over: when injured hide so prey doesn't find you.

Less than a mile from home, within the neighborhood, if only I payed more attention.

After finding it, I assume her, under a bush I carefully brought her to my passenger seat and drove to a nearby vet. They're closed on sundays but I was told they were in some sort of meeting so I waited until they came out. I waited and waited, while the cat waited, breathing heavily but without complaint. They didn't really observe the cat carefully, but I guess no blood was a good sign. Still, internal bleeding I learned would be the biggest problem. Poor cute little thing just sitting their on my leather seat.

I almost called animal control, no gas to drive the half hour to the closest 24/7 emergency animal center. But I couldn't do it. Now it's closed in our pantry with milk and cheese which it has not touched too much.

The cat whines every now and then, but very rarely, last time was when I tried to pick it up incorrectly. I am convinced I have crushed the poor thing's hip. The area seems wet but no blood and I haven't seen the cat licking the area. I feel as if I saw a bone penetrating the skin just ever so in a certain area, I'm not too sure and am afraid to look. The cat is fully aware, makes eye contact, successfully hissed when my dog got too close. Unsure exactly what to do, the cat seems way too calm to be completely stray but it has no tag. Seems like we'll be trying to take care of her for a few days and either call animal control or set her free where I hit her in a few days. I guy at the vet said its a good thing this is the worst thing I've done with my car. I still feel bad.

Constructive criticism is always appreciated.
