Dias
At the bottom end of Adderley Street is the statue of Bartholomew Dias, a Portuguese explorer who was the first European to reach the Cape of Good Hope in 1487. This statue were donated by the Portuguese government in 1952 for Cape Town's tercentenary celebrations.
Dias originally named the Cape of Good Hope the "Cape of Storms" (Cabo das Tormentas). It was later renamed the Cape of Good Hope (Cabo da Boa Esperança) by King John II of Portugal because it represented the opening of a route to the east.
