The Peats
About this time of year we cut peats in Lewis. Hand-cut peats would probably need a team of two or even three pairs to cut enough for one house for a year. By the time it is cut, dried, transported back to the house, and then stacked, it takes a lot of work - not exactly "free fuel" as the tourists seem to think! Cutting on a good day is great fun - in bad weather it is fairly foul. These are newly cut and drying in the wind on the banks - lots of winter warmth here!
