Leicester City v West Ham United

This evening I'll be at at the King Power Stadium, Leicester, to see West Ham take on the home side.

There is a much more significant Dumfries-shire connection however; Leicester's manager from 1955-58 was Dave Halliday, born in Dumfries. He led them to the Second Division title in 1957 , having managed Aberdeen to the Scottish Cup and League. The only other Aberdeen manager to win the League was Alex Ferguson. Whatever happened to him?

Halliday was a prolific goalscorer in his playing days: 373 goals in 449 appearances. As a Dundee player he was the league's tops scorer in 1923-24 before moving to Sunderland where he scored an astonishing 165 goals in 175 matches.

Newcastle United signed his brother Billy but he made only one first team appearance, ironically, against Leicester City.

Dave moved on to Arsenal for a season, once scoring 4 goals in a 6-6 draw (against Leicester again!). He was dropped from the Arsenal side at the end of that season and therefore missed out on a cup-winners medal. In fact, it is astonishing to consider that he never won a medal and was never capped for Scotland, being continually overlooked in favour of Hughie Gallacher. Like Dave and Billy, Hughie also started his professional career with Queen of the South. I'm sure Queens would love to have any of them on their books now.
