Jack and Jill

Jack and Jill windmills, Clayton, West Sussex.

There has been a reference to a windmill on this site, on top of the South Downs from as far back as 1765. Although Jack is now privately owned, Jill is still open to the public on most Sundays from May to September, and entrance is free. Sadly I didn't realise this, so missed out today. Still, an excuse to go back.

They both feature in the 1973 film 'The Black Windmill', starring Michael Caine and Donald Pleasance.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, Jill is the one with four sails, Jack has two. (Although I'm led to believe they are called sweeps, not sails).
