Dogwood Puddle Pics

mayflies and peepers

A week ago the mayflies emerged, and the midges were hovering above mats of waterlogged pollen.
Last night it rained, so the flowering dogwoods are losing their petals.
This morning a heavy mist glowed between the hanging leaves of the hackberry beyond the bedroom window.
The osprey and herons have returned to the lake.
The geese are nesting now, and no longer take flight, but call out and feign and stand their ground.
This evening the peepers came, their tiny bellowings echoing across the water.
Soon mounds of eggs will choke the shallows,
And tadpoles will begin a game of Darwinian roulette.
