Blackness Castle, Firth of Forth

Bathed here in spring sunshine, the castle was built during the 15th century and altered during the reign of the unfortunate Queen Mary. At that time, it was a powerful artillery fort but I am not quite sure just what it was supposed to guard as it is a bit remote from any main ports on the river. After having been cuffed about a bit by Cromwell's forces, it was rebuilt and used as a prison then as an ammunition store before falling into disuse until being "rescued" and restored by Historic Scotland. Recent highlights have seen the castle appear in films such as Ivanhoe, The Bruce and Hamlet. Worth a visit and there are pleasant walks nearby.
