Carol: Rosie & Mr. Fun

Sentimental Journey

"It stopped traffic and brought people out of their offices!"

The space shuttle Discovery made its last voyage from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, today to Dulles International Airport on the way to its permanent new home at the Smithsonian, at the National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va. It made the journey atop a modified 747.

Discovery has a 28-year history as a spaceship. It has flown 39 missions, more than any other single spacecraft. It has logged more than 148 million miles of travel, over more than a year's worth of days in space.

Several other shuttles will be moved to other locations. The shuttle Endeavour will be flown to the California Science Center in Los Angeles this fall. I sure hope we get to see that one when it goes over. We are in the flight pattern to Los Angeles, so possibly we'll view that historic moment.

This was my first day back to the classroom after spring break and it was good to be with students. Don't get me wrong, if someone offered me another week of spring break I'd absolutely take it and endure the missing of students! ;-)

Rosie (& Mr. Fun), aka Carol

P.S. The temperature was a high today of 84 degrees F.

P.P.S. Our refrigerator/freezer quit working today. Oh the thrills of managing a home. Just last month I made the executive decision to not re-up the warranty policy on the frig we purchased in 2004. That means it died when it was 8 years old. Mr. Fun says that is planned obsolesence. Our first really groovy side-by-side frost-free refrigerator/freezer (avocado color) lasted 14 years. Not a chance of that happening nowadays.
