Wallace Hartley Bandmaster on the Titanic
On my way to my mums in Silsden for an overnight stay as had evening meeting tonight with Love & Etiquette Foundation in Oswaldtwistle and one tomorrow morning in Blackburn with the Arts Development team. Will be allowed to watch Champions League Football in peace tonight with no complaints from my other girls at home.
Remembered had forgotten to Blip and with sun setting whilst driving through Colne and was getting worried might miss my first journal entry ever. Anyway I pulled over to take a shot of Colnes lovely hilltop skyline when I spotted this by the war memorial.
Turns out to be a lovely bronze bust and memorial monument of none-other than Wallace Hartley the Bandmaster off the Titanic. I presume he must be the one that led the band in playing the Hymn Nearer My God to Thee?
Very moving tributes of flowers with a lovely White Star Line bouquet, and an odd model of the ship to the side (which I tried to include in other shots but didn't quite work).
Quite ironic since I had been tweeting last week about why there was so much glorifying of the sinking coming up to the centenary. Interestingly Andrew Marr said the same on BBC1 on his Sunday morning programme.
I really liked this though.
