The Unexpected
Midlake - Roscoe (Wizards' Sleeve Remix)
After a wonderful evening of shooting sakura, I went to dinner with a great friend and bumped into some other friends. We all decided to eat together and despite not having known each other so well, through the unexpected came an incredible night of... for lack of a better word, vibing. I had missed the last train so we all chilled out at my favourite restaurant in the area (perhaps all of Japan) and chatted. Music, film, cameras, relationships, etc. We then chilled at my friend's apartment, shared stories, ghost stories and more drinks.
Perhaps the most important topic of the night was "connection" and the invasion of personal privacy due to the frighteningly invasive nature of modern communication and its immediacy. Too connected if you will.
Despite its convenience and connectivity, we all agreed that it's come to a point where nobody is no longer classically connected. The mystique of choosing to meet and talk with someone, face-to-face, or choosing to respect one's space because they weren't able to answer their phone, strips away the anxiety of not having a response. I left a message so why aren't they replying? It seemed a lot more simplistic when you'd call someone to meet on the phone and you'd be there, REALLY be there, instead of calling in late or somehow dipping into communicative lathargy because you can just cancel at any minute. What's more important is respecting someone for being late because you know you can't get to them and the mutual understanding of the verbal agreement. It's incredible.
Just through the unexpected and coincidence, there was something so simple and amazing. I wish it were more easier to truly connect with someone on an everyday level. To more good times... true times.
