The Grand National

Not Many People Know That (Number 12)

Not Many People Know That during the First World War Aintree Racecourse was used for military purposes, and the race was transferred to Gatwick.

Gatwick racecourse opened in 1890, there was a small airfield between the wars, but it was used by the Royal Airforce during the Second World War and racing never took place there again.

It's just as well when you think of the number of planes and passengers using the racecourse airport today.

This image is a photograph of a handicap Hurdle Race at Gatwick from 1926.

In today's Grand National Synchronised, the favourite is aiming to make history by being only the second horse to win both the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Grand National in the same year. This was last achieved by the legendary Golden Miller in 1934.

In the pub sweepstake I have drawn Rare Bob, and Swing Bill, I have taken this as an omen an gone for all the other horses in the race with men's names!!!!

Good Luck Punters.
