Elephanta Island
Elephanta Island, also known a Gharapuri Island (place of caves) is a 45 minute boat-ride from Mumbai and is home to a set of temples carved into rock. It's nothing as grand as the Ellora Caves (which I've not been to but which I've seen in pictures), but impressive to me, nonetheless.
The air inside the caves is a pleasantly cool break from the heat outside. They are filled with beautiful statues of Shiva, but it's this iconic representation of the god that caught my eye. A Shiva Linga, symbol of fertility still actively worshipped was something I found beautiful and seemed to work quite well in black and white: a medium for which I have much fondness. Tomorrow it's back to the wildlife.
