Why did the mallards cross the road?

I was not the only one who watched in astonishment today as this pair of mallards crossed at the green man in Sheffield city centre. This is definitely a picture requiring a caption, so if you are reading this, there's the challenge. There's plenty of food for thought in the picture. If I get some good answers, I'll choose my favourite and post it tomorrow.

Had breakfast with my photography classmates today and lunch with two special friends whom I don't get to see often enough! Got caught out in showers a few times as well.
