The Devil's Dyke
My daughter had an athletics trial in Brighton this morning so I dropped her off and then went for a stroll around the Devil's Dyke, a steep-sided dry chalk valley on the South Downs subject of all sorts of myths and legends. The Dyke was a great attraction in Victorian and Edwardian times with its fantastic views north over the Sussex Weald and west along the Downs and as far as the Isle of Wight. At various times its had a railway line, a funicular and even a cable car to bring people up, down and across. Now its used by walkers, cyclists and paragliders.
Somehow the image really flattens the scenery - it is actually very steep!
