Easter Bonnet
Went to see Paula's Mum in rainy Bognor. She had entered an Easter Bonnet competition and possibly got a little carried away while making it.
"Mad as a hatter" is a colloquial phrase that has its origins in the making of felt hats in 18th and 19th centuries. Mercury used in the manufacturing process was absorbed by the workers and caused some to go insane.
Paula's Mum insists that she didn't use any mercury while making her hat.
