Catherine Lacey: BoyStory

He's my brother

Edit - Reuben is now in open heart surgery - updates on Facebook til I get home with my camera. Been a rough week with a major trauma thrown in, but his heart has been repaired. His left lung is still full of fluid and the xray paints the picture for me.

"Callum, can you help Mummy please?"

"I'm too busy" he replied.

Fair enough, he had helped me tidy the house quite a bit whilst Reuben was sleeping.

Tomorrow is the day, at least I hope it is. Watching Reuben to see how he's doing. He and I have a little cough caught through the antibiotics. Oh dear.

The boys had much fun this afternoon playing shops. I would be the Mummy, though actually we'd take that role in turn, and visit the sweet shop with our little son who was carrying an Easter basket with plastic money. Mr Jones the shopkeeper had in his shop a beautiful display of all the additive-high candy the boys amassed from the weekend even though I didn't actually buy any. My organic gummy bears however seem to have now been discarded. But anyway, I digress. And the shopkeeper, mostly Callum, would tell us how much the sweeties cost (mostly $4 each) and we would make our choices and receive change from his box of paper and plastic money. Callum's face completely lit up at the game, he was enthralled with his shop and with our eternal comings and goings, our Thank yous and his You're welcomes!
