Lighting the New Fire
Part of the ancient symbolism of the resurrection, this dramatic moment takes place in the night between Holy Saturday and Easter Day, when a fire is lit and the Paschal Candle takes its flame from it. Everyone carries small candles, and the light is passed round in the dark church before the Exultet is sung to plainsong and the organ and bells burst into peals of joy to signify the Resurrection.
