The Ocean Breathes Salty

Fear.

Today I volunteered at The Lord's Place, a homeless outreach organization in West Palm Beach. Upon arrival I was told to sit with some of the clients. I sat with a man name Ty. Before lunch Ty got up and gave a speech to all those at the shelter. His speech was titled Fear.

Although I have been fortunate enough to have not encountered many of the problems he had to face I really connected with a lot of what he had to say. One particular part stuck out to me...Ty was talking about overcoming a drug addiction but it's much bigger than that:

"What I can do for myself today is the important part and I have to always remember my past does not make my present and my future is determined by what I am doing in the present."

I learned from Ty that it's so easy to get caught up in the past and beat yourself up over the mistakes you've made but, like he said: there's no use in looking back and dwelling, you have to live life in the present and make your current actions stepping stones to the future life you want. Reflect on the past, learn from the past, then let the mistakes of the past go.
