Chithurst Church
Gorgeous little church at Chithurst (just outside Stedham, near Midhurst).
Believed to date from the late 11th century, but it's not certain whether it is late Saxon or early Norman. Either way, a beautiful little church, which is very lucky to still be standing.
In 1956, the Rector wrote to the Chuch Commissioners saying "That Chithurst Church is surplus to requirements. Only one service is held there a month and that is attended by only one person". He offered some solutions: "either keep the church as a museum piece, or leave it to fall down, or pull it down and sell the stone"
I don't "get" religion, but this is a very pretty building in a beautiful spot where you feel you could just sit and reflect for hours on end ....
Especially with a friend who's a bad influence and a bottle of single malt :-)
