He would have been 88 today.

This is his official 'mug shot', taken early in his career, when he was a serious young actor, hoping for roles in Shakespeare, Chekhov, Ibsen, Thornton Wilder... He did get some of those, but more often they wanted him to sing and look gorgeous!

I'll see if I can find out who has the one of him in blazer and straw boater and holding a chimpanzee... (a real one - it was a publicity shot taken when he was in a show at the old Sydney Tivoli (long gone - sigh!) - he wasn't actually the chimp's straight man, he was in a vocal sextet. For the choral boffins, it was SSATBB, I think.)
