Thanks for Sphagnum
N and I drove down to Devon in glorious sunshine and a fair bit of traffic. We drove across Dartmoor and stopped for lunch at the Old Inn in Widecombe in the Moor, a place famous for its annual Fair and Ol'Uncle Tom Cobley an' All. I had never noticed this large shell before set down by the walls of the old house near the church.
Its plaque says:
" This 15" Naval shell was presented by the National War Savings Comittee in 1920 to the people of Widecombe in recognition of their efforts during the First World War gathering Sphagnum moss for use in the treatment of wounds."
