The Mezquita, Cordoba, Spain

A fairly compact city built around The Mezquita de Cordoba - also known as The Cathedral of St Mary of the Assumption.
Today it is usually referred to as the Cathedral of Cordoba but the majority of its art and architecture is the work of Islamic architects who started the building in 784 AD.

This site was first home to a Roman temple dedicated to Janus and following that a Visigothic Cathedral dedicated to St Vincent of Saragossa before the Mezquita (Spanish for Mosque) was started.

Cordoba was the target for many invasions and each conquering wave added its own mark to the building.

In 1984 the historic centre of Cordoba, including the Mezquita, was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

I am so lucky to be able to visit these beautiful places whilst working - a fortunate lady indeed.
