Burn Baby Burn

This is a burner head for one of our flare booms. A flare boom is basically a long, say around 80', boom that sticks out from the side of the rig at 90 degrees.

When we get to the testing stage of a well (which doesn't happen every well) the well will be allowed to "flow" up through the marine riser through some tanks and testing equipment on our deck then out through these burner heads, which as the name suggests burn off the excess gas. That's the simple version lol.

These burn very hot and require cooling systems, like the rings with nozzles seen and the half moon in behind which pump out jets of water. We also have our own cooling spray nozzles around the rig. Even with being around 80' away and the cooling systems I've seen plastic melt and paint blister on the rig.

These are quite a sight when they are burning, especially at night.
