2012 Challenge: Architecture.
My latest entry for the 2012 challenge - architecture.
There are different bits of architecture covering a number of years on in this photo.
In the foreground is the bridge over Mariners Canal, which was built in the 1980s (I think) to provide a link between the redeveloped Erie Basin (formerly known as Dock 9) and Ontario Basin (formerly known as Dock 8.)
The apartments to either side of the canal were some of the first developments on Salford Quays. These purposely low-rise apartments make up what is collectively known as Grain Wharf, with St. Lawrence Quay apartments on the left side of the canal and Vancouver Quay on the right hand side of the canal.
In the far distance, almost in line with the canal, is the Abito building. Construction on this finished about two years ago.
And the last bit of architecture that's worth a mention is right in front, where the water is. This is now known as Erie Basin, but it was formerly Dock 9. It was the biggest and deepest of all the docks on what were Manchester Docks, and it used to connect directly to the Manchester Ship Canal. Constructed in the 19th century.
