One for the Record!
Went to the park today and was amazed by how many people had taken time out of their otherwise potentially, hectic schedules, to indulge themselves in some of this record breaking weather.
However, it was one of those moments which seemed to be frozen in time.Groups of friends and families, sat alongside singular figures on park benches , or lay stretched out on the grass soaking up the intense rays of the sun.Children were running around, yet a strange hush had fallen.
We moved on. Just out of our then gaze and earshot, was a young man, sitting strumming his guitar and humming a rather haunting ballad. Totally caught up in his music,he was blissfully unaware of the attention he was receiving from those around him.It was now obvious to us, that people were purposely silent, in order to hear the strains of music as it floated on the still air.
It was more like a day at the height of Summer than one of the first days of Spring.I was immediatley reminded of a song once recorded by The Kinks (amongst others.)I could remember a similar such day in my youth, sitting on the grass in the sunshine and hearing this song on the airwaves of my KB transistor radio. So many years ago, yet the memories came flooding back.
Sunny Afternoon lyrics
Songwriters: Davies, Raymond Douglas;
The tax man's taken all my dough
And left me in my stately home
Lazing on a sunny afternoon
And I can't sail my yacht
He's taken everythin' I've got
All I've got's this sunny afternoon
Save me, save me
Save me from this squeeze
I've got a big fat momma tryin' to break me
And I love to live so pleasantly
Live this life of luxury
Lazing on a sunny afternoon
In the summertime, in the summertime
In the summertime
My girlfriend's gone off with my car
And gone back to her ma and pa
Telling tales of drunkenness and cruelty
Now I'm sitting here
Sipping at my ice cold beer
Lazing on a sunny afternoon
Help me, help me, help me sail away
Well, give me two good reasons
Why I ought to stay
'Cause I love to live so pleasantly
Live this life of luxury
Lazing on a sunny afternoon
In Summertime, in summertime
In summertime
Here's hoping this young man doesn't find himself in a similar situation and that should this be the case, he is finding solace in what he does the best - his music!
