Nearly there

The buds on the wisteria are full and ripe and obviously longing to unfold, this to me is the true beginning of spring though my son insists the first day of spring was on the 19th March for some strange astrological reason.

Be that as it may, we have two wisteria on the pergola, one planted in a large terracotta pot (because when the tiles round the pool were laid I forgot to ask the builder to leave a hole for planting and there is now a mesh of steel underneath the tile). The other I transplanted into the earth about a metre away from the pillar of the roof so it looks a little weird as it reaches out for support, but no doubt it will grow in time. They are both sprouting buds like crazy but as this is their first year in competition it will be interesting to see which one does best.

Apart from the wisteria nothing else is showing much sign of life, its still quite chilly here in the mornings though the midday sun is warm, I am keeping my eye on my favourite tree, the magnificent stag horn sumac, which with its sweeping "antlers" always reminds me of Scotland, There are many nobbly swellings which bodes well for a bumper season.

This week will see the first veggie seeds planted, trying a completely new and unheard of root crop this year, will let you know progress!
