pharyngeally compromised

Despite the complications which might arise from smelling of TCP during working hours I was compelled to go a-gargling with it a few times today in order to attempt to prevent the mild discomfort in my lower throat from becoming an unpleasance of the sinuses. I wonder why the question is always "Are you using TCP?" when someone smells its smell? Almost as awkward as "Have you applied TCP recently?"
