Positively Medieval
Today I was faced with a difficult question that has no doubt bothered many conscientious employees in recent years. What do you do when your boss is put in stocks and has things thrown at him? The answer, I quickly decided, is take lots of photos.
The Cathedral is hosting the medieval Play of Daniel, and today there was a Feast of Fools as part of it. There were various stalls selling things, jugglers, these swordsmen, and stocks. And it was only right that the Dean of the Cathedral (aforementioned boss) be subjected to the horror of having wet sponges thrown at him. Oh how we laughed. Then the mayor had a turn, at whom his (retired, not out-voted) predecessor seemed to get great enjoyment out of pelting sponges.
It was quite a lot of fun all in all. Lots of people wandered through, there were many costumes selling their wares and rustling up audience enthusiasm. Apparently back in the day there used to be such things held in the evening as well, which sounds like a wonderful idea to me. I have images of mid-winter mulled wine, outdoor fires, and jongleurs. *Happy sigh*
