Hallgrimskirkja
Here she is The Church of Hallgrimur, one of ten most beautiful churches in the world. I have followed the building of this church since I can remember, I even have some 8mm footage of it (half built) somewhere, as I was thinking ahead and going to make a documentary about it - did not realize (age 16) that the format would have to be 16mm or HD and so on...
There is lot of information about this church on the Net, but a short guide would be that it is named after Hallgrimur Petursson, 1614-1674 our most famous and beloved psalm poet and most notable for his work The Passion Hymns - You can Google the underline words and get all the information you want.
And this from Wikipedia:
State Architect Guðjón Samúelsson's design he church in 1937. He is said to have designed it to resemble the basalt lava flows of Iceland's landscape.
It took 38 years to build the church. Construction work began in 1945 and ended in 1986, the landmark tower being completed long before the church's actual completion. The crypt beneath the choir was consecrated in 1948, the steeple and wings were completed in 1974. The nave was consecrated in 1986. Situated in the centre of Reykjavík, it is one of the city's best-known landmarks and is visible throughout the city.
I had just finished taking the 17 pictures to make this one when a bus full of Japanese tourist stopped by the church door and all of them had to take a picture - and I did my favorite thing - take pictures of people taking picture - see the Blipfolio. I will tell you about the statue in statue-week.
