Auction Day

Day 1 of the fine art sale at Mitchells in Cockermouth had some interesting lots. These Cumbrian road signs being one of them. They were estimated at £70-£100 but ended up fetching nearly £700!!
Many of the original cast iron signs in Cumbria have recently been replaced by the local Council to "save money" instead of painting them, I think at these prices they could probably afford to paint them with gold paint!

Lets hope that the remaining signs in the County don't mysteriously disappear!

I'm not entirely sure where these signs came from but many lots in the auction have come from the Herbert & Mary Jackson estate. They were a local couple who collected and wrote books of local interest. They were also passionate Bulldog owners and collected many bulldog artifacts. My Grandfather was their local vet and looked after their dogs. They always gave him one of their books everytime they wrote one, sadly I don't know what happened to them.

Looking forward to Day 2 tomorrow when I will be winking at the auctioneer!
