I first read Edgar Rice Burrough's Martian stories over 35 years ago and have re-read them every few years since. Captain John Carter, a clean limbed fighting man of Virginia, has been my touchstone for what a hero should be ever since.

He did not have a story arc. He did not have a back-story. He was always around 30. He was noble.

The guy on screen tonight was none of these things, and that bothered me more than the ludicrous liberties that Disney have taken with the plot.

Having said all that I still enjoyed the movie, even if it was set on no version of Barsoom I ever read about.
