I've been working with survivors of sexual abuse and sexual violence, in a specialist support agency, for over 13 years now.
The new mumsnet campaign made the news today. It's called: We believe You. It's great other agencies are highlighting the issues. Yet we've known about poor reporting for a long time now though.
So, I wonder why society finds it hard to believe the women (and men) who report and disclose?
-Too scary to believe?
-Doesn't make sense, so can't be true?
-He's such a nice looking, charming man and couldn't possibly do THAT?
-Well you were dressed so inappropriately.....
The more we can accept that these horrible crimes do happen, the more we can respond from our hearts. And become better at supporting people to survive and thrive, after sexual violence and sexual abuse.
