Blood River Monument

This amazing, larger than life, monument consists of 64 bronze Voortrekker wagons lined up in a circle, or laager, as they were in 1838 when less than 500 Voortrekkers defended themselves against 10,000 Zulus.

The Zulus could only engage the Voortrekkers if they got close enough for man to man combat. Armed with rifles, and two cannon, the Voortrekkers repelled wave after wave of attacks from the Zulu.

They say 3,000 Zulus died, turning the river Ncome red, whilst on the trekker side casualties amounted to only three hurt.
