"-Saw about my hats"

A hat is a shameless flatterer, calling attention to an escaping curl, a tawny braid, a sprinkling of freckles over a pert nose, directing the eye to what is most unique about a face. Its curves emphasize a shining pair of eyes, a lofty forehead; its deep brim accentuates the pale tint of a cheek, creates an aura of prettiness, suggests a mystery that awakens curiosity in the onlooker.

The Nora Diary, Day 4

Cloudy, at noontime a pouring rain. Freda and I went in town in spite of it. Did some shopping-a pair of shoes-saw about my hats- Had supper at Jacksons and then to the Orpheum. Got home about ten o'clock. Rained hard all day and still raining when we came home.


The popularity of the Panama straw dress hat soared at the start of the 20th century when a photograph of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt sporting a stylish fino appeared in the world press. The demand for the chic hat rose. Prominent companies around the globe began distributing them. By 1944 the Panama hat had become Ecuador's primary export item.


Panama hats were traditionally worn in summer months and favoured for their lightweight properties. Panama hats were Ecuadorian in origin but during the Spanish American War of 1898, the American government reputedly bought around 50,000 such hats for their troops from merchants in Panama. This helped to popularise Panama hats in the West.

This day came in cloudy & cool. My new iPad has made it all the way from China via Hong Kong and Alaska. It was in Kentucky at 1AM, on to me tomorrow.
