Lost in Translation.
I tutored a little Creole boy today at the library. He wanted to draw a picture of an airplane. I told him he could if he wrote about it first.
He wrote:
"This airplane I am going to draw is going to b fast and the furious. But kind of faster because it is going to blow your head off. Your also would be so surprised that your jaw would fall down."
I was taken aback after reading that "it is going to blow [my] head off". After staring blankly at him for a few seconds I asked Terrence, "is this appropriate?". He innocently looked at me and said "it's a figure of speech". I realized what he meant to say was "it will blow your mind" and "it will make your jaw drop". I guess some things just don't translate well.
Here's his lovely airplane picture.
