Pill boxes defending Happisburgh Beach, Norfolk
Two pill boxes are defending the coast at the eroding beach at Happisburgh.
The light-house is the oldest working light in East Anglia and was built in 1790. Orignally there was a lower light and the pair marked the entrance to the safe passage around the treacherous Happisburgh Sands.
The Church visible at the centre is St Mary's and dates from 15th Century.
The beach although often beaten by rough seas would be a theoretical landing place for a German invasion. There are remains of many pill-boxes along the coast in the area - one having fallen off the cliff further along the beach. These two are defending the light-house to the south-east of the village.
