The Ship of the Fens

Ely Cathedral.

A visit to the fenland town of Ely is always a delight. Standing proud of the surrounding flat fenland the Cathedral, surrounded by many ancient buildings, can be seen from miles around, "riding the sky, like a great ship."

Work on the building started in the 11th Century, on the site of a monastry founded by St Ethelreda in 673. More information here.
