Island Count and Near Death Experience
Today 7 of us went out in three groups to the annual island count of Soay sheep, a practise which is well over 50 years old. I went with Jill on the 'route of death', along some of the steepest parts of the island. This picture doesnt really give justice to the fact that at the bottom of these hills are massive cliffs.
I should have known something was up when Jill asked me if I was scared of heights... of course, I'm not, but I didn't realise just how bad it was going to be. She's been there fore nearly twenty years and I was thrilled at having her guidance along some of the completely untouched parts of the islands. That was until I realised that my boots had rubbish grip and I kept slipping all over the place.
I was slipping and sliding about but I was ok until we got to a particularly steep part around the back of the island... I suddenly slipped and slid about 5 metres down the slope and about three metres from the top of a massive cliff. Needless to say I was *terrified* as I was only gripping onto wet grass with my hands and *trying* to maintain some kind of friction between my boots and the ground. It took me ten minutes to work up the courage to let go and try to scramble back up the slope.
It was worth it though as the views were beautiful.
