Gorse Cutting

I could hardly believe my eyes this morning, blue sky and I have a day at home. I began the day in the garden but my neighbour arrived with his chainsaw and an hour to spare! That's quite a gift as it's a chance to get on with some task on the land. I have a number of self seeded birch trees, which need thinning, so we cleared an area of very leggy gorse, so the young birch could be transplanted. Joe cut the gorse to knee height, it coppices very well, he cuts the trunk for firewood and leaves the brash.
My job is to gather up the large pieces of firewood, some are very hefty indeed and stack them to season, this is only a few months. The brash also gets piled up and left to rot down. We cleared about half the area and had worked for at least two hours! Another stint like this will have the land ready for planting.
I love this kind of physical work, it was fun discovering many self seeded Holly trees and clumps of bluebells. All the wood will have to be transported down to the house, bit by bit, if only those two donkeys were trained, it would be an ideal task for them but they are so stubborn!!!!!!!!
