Why the long facial hair?

We dipped into Newport's higgledy-piggledy, cram-jammed antique shop before our ascent of Carn Ingli. I spotted and recognized one of these - not much call for them now I thought, the days of the sort of droopy nasal topiary that dipped into the tea have long gone.

But on our way down from the mountain who should we meet but this fine fellow with a neatly coiffed little 'tache adorning his handsome nose. Dang, I should have bought him the cup!

Strangely enough if you google horses with moustaches/moustachioed horses quite a few come up including this magnificent specimen.
