Turdus...
...philomelos.
The song thrush. Absolutely lovely birds and I'm so pleased to have at least one visit our garden daily. S/he is quite brave, coming to within a few inches of the house, but is not at the top of the pecking order - blackbirds will often chase him/her away.
They are obviously tasty beasts too, as they have been hunted for many thousands of years. In the south of Spain, they are still catching the thrushes using birdlime. The EU has been trying to ban birdlime for a while, but without much success in Spain.
Birdlime is basically a strong glue, which is fermented from various natural substances; sometimes mashed holly tree branches are used. They smear it over the tree branches so that the thrush is unable to alight.
Perhaps they have nothing better to do?
