The 13th Century 20m high
Bell Tower is all that is left standing today of Cambuskenneth Abbey.
Encircled by the River Forth the Abbey was founded as an Augustinian settlement by King David I in 1147. The Abbey ammassed considerable wealth and influence through its royal patronage and links with Stirling Castle and it became one of the richest abbeys in the country.
Closely involved with the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314 Robert the Bruce held Parliament at the Abbey in 1326.
After the Battle of Sauchieburn in 1488, King James III was murdered near Bannockburn and is buried at Cambuskenneth along with his wife, Queen Margaret of Denmark. Bones thought to be the remains of James and his queen were excavated in 1864 and re-interred, at Queen Victoria's command, under a stone monument still in situ today.
