A Dartmoor Letterbox

Back in the 1800's an man called James Perrott used to take visitors on walks over Dartmoor to Cranmere Pool where there was a jar provided for them to leave their visiting cards to show that they had been there.

Today there are thousends of little boxes hidden away all over Dartmoor and you can even buy a book of clues to help the "hunter" to find them. In each box you will find a pad on which to record your visit and a rubber stamp from whch you take an impression to add to your collection.

When I started back in the 70's you would either find one by accident or be passed a grid refference and clue on a scrap of paper over a pint in the Prince of Wales. Letter boxing has always been, and still is I guess, a great way to get your children up amd walking on the moor. It helped them to get to know the moor and its history and was a great family activity. We like many others had our own stamp which we would use to stamp the visitors book in the box and we would exchange it with other box hunter that we met
